A larger than life sculpture of a platypus.
Waymark Code: WMYTEW
Location: Queensland, Australia

The sculpture was erected in 2002 & is constructed of steel parts sourced from motor vehicles & tractors looking at that spring. A large steel spring forms the body, with plates forming the tail & head. Cogs form the shoulder blades & eyes with the odd spanner used in the legs. It has been allowed to rust naturally.

No living mammal is more peculiar than the platypus — an Aussie icon. The platypus has been the subject of great controversy, baffling scientists, naturalists and evolutionary theorists ever since 1798. Scientists initially wrote the platypus off as an elaborate hoax perpetrated by skilled taxidermists!

Certainly no taxidermists was involved in putting this platypus together & swimming is beyond its capabilities.

The plaque on the side of the sculpture states:

Platypus sculptured in 2002 by members of the Valley District Youth Council & Amber Morton. Sponsored by Arts Queensland & Mirani Shire.
