Anne of Green Gables - The Musical has been performed at Confederation Centre of the Arts since the summer after Queen Elizabeth opened the building in October 1964.
Purdy much every Canadian knows the story of Anne and it is the focal point of a booming summer tourism season for central Prince Edward Island. Anne is a character depicted in Lucy Maud Montgomery's fictional tales of a young red-headed hot-headed teenager orphan who moves to the farm of her foster parents in the 1910s. The books are amongst the biggest sellers in Canada and the tales have been turned into many TV mini-series.
The 2,500th performance was given on August 23, 2017. A song from the musical was part of the feature performance at the opening of the Confederation Centre of the Arts on October 6, 1964, playing to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh as well as Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.
It's not just Canadians who love Anne. The musical has also toured Japan a couple of times as well as appearing in London UK, and it played off-Broadway in New York.
