St. Joseph Hospital began as a Catholic hospital in 1873 and in a newspaper article announcing its opening, it was open for all patients, rich or poor, and those who were able to pay would only be charged the cost of boarding. In 1997, the hospital purchased the former Community General hospital which continues to be used as a downtown clinic. In 2006, a new 40 acre hospital and medical office building was opened in Bern Township. In 2015, the hospital became the first member of the Penn State Health and changed its name to Penn State Health St. Joseph.
Per their website, the mission of Penn State Health St. Joseph is to nurture the healing ministry of the Church by bringing it new life, energy and viability in the 21st Century. Fidelity to the Gospel urges us to emphasize human dignity and social justice as we move toward the creation of healthier communities.
Although St. Joseph is a general care hospital, it is well known for and has received awards for their Heart Institute and Chest Pain center and for their work with stroke victims.
