Joseph Ramoux fait ses études dans sa ville na tale de Liège. En 1761, il suit les cours du collège des jésuites wallons avant d'entrer au séminaire. Grâce à une bourse, il se rend aux Pays-Bas où il occupe le poste de 1er chantre à Amsterdam.
Joseph Ramoux est ordonné prêtre en 1773. Pour remédier à la désorganisation de l'enseignement secondaire à la suite de du bref Dominus ac Redemptor du pape Clément XIV supprimant l'ordre des jésuites, le prince-évêque de Liège Velbruck rappelle, entre autres, Ramoux pour le placer à la tête du grand collège épiscopal et lui octroie la chaire rhétorique .
Partisan des idées nouvelles, il participe en 1779 à la fondation de la Société libre d'émulation, dont il devient administrateur et bibliothécaire. À la mort de son protecteur en 1784, il est nommé curé de Glons et le restera pendant plus de quarante-deux ans.
Passionné de botanique et d'histoire, il s'adonne aussi à la poésie et à la musique. Il écrit le « Valeureux Liégeois » en 1790, à la demande de Lambert-Joseph de Donceel, commandant des milices liégeoises, qui souhaite un hymne national « pour expulser des foyers de nos concitoyens les ennemis de la patrie qui ont osé y pénétrer ».
L'abbé Ramoux meurt le 8 janvier 1826, il est enterré dans son presbytère mais il fut exhumé plus tard pour lui donner une sépulture plus décente. Selon l'abbé Lucien Vanstipelen, les reste de l'abbé Ramoux se trouvent de la caveau des curés de l'église de Glons.

Gilles-Joseph-Evrard Ramoux, known as Abbé Ramoux, born in Liège on January 20, 1750 and died in Glons on January 8, 1826 (aged 75), is a writer, botanist and musician, author of the patriotic song 'Valiants Liegeois'.
Joseph Ramoux studied in his native city of Liège. In 1761, he attended the College of Walloon Jesuits before entering the seminary. With a grant, he went to the Netherlands where he held the position of 1st cantor in Amsterdam.
Joseph Ramoux was ordained priest in 1773.
A supporter (partisan) of new ideas, he participated in 1779 in the founding of the Free Society of Emulation, of which he became administrator and librarian. On the death of his protector in 1784, he was appointed pastor of Glons and remained for more than forty-two years.
Passionate about botany and history, he also devotes himself to poetry and music. He wrote the "Valois Liegeois" in 1790, at the request of Lambert-Joseph de Donceel, commander of the Liege militia, who wishes a national anthem "to expel the homes of our countrymen enemies of the fatherland who dared to enter."
The abbot Ramoux died on January 8, 1826, he is buried in his presbytery but he was exhumed later to give him a more decent burial. According to Father Lucien Vanstipelen, the rest of the abbot Ramoux are from the cellar of the priests of the church of Glons.
Curé Ramoux is considered of great influence in the development of the Bassenge community.
