"In the second half of the 1800's and into the early 1900?s, doctors used carriages to visit their patients at their homes in cities and rural areas. Their preferred vehicles were American designed and manufactured buggies. A buggy was a hardy, four-wheeled, two person carriage of many designs including the Piano Box, Coal Box and Physician's Phaeton, which collectively became commonly referred to as the Doctor's Buggy because of their popularity among physicians. This particular buggy is a Coal Box buggy.
Unilateral and affordable, the buggy's lightweight design was less demanding on a horse and allowed the doctor to travel long distances at relatively fast speeds. A doctor could quickly and easily hitch up his horse when called to an emergency. The buggy's large wheels and body's high ground clearance made negotiating rutted, uneven or muddy roads possible. The retractable top was convenient for both pleasant and inclement weather. The buggy's sturdy and practical design had a major influence on the designs of early horseless carriages (automobiles).
