On May 26, 1978, three troopers were killed in the line of duty by two escaped prisoners. This is a polished black granite monument which tells of Houston "Pappy" Summers. It reads:

Trooper Houston "Pappy" Summers, Trooper Billy Young
and 2Lt James Pat Grimes were shot and killed while
attempting to apprehend two escapees who were wanted
for several murders since their escape. Trooper Summers
and Trooper Young had been assigned to participate
in a search for two McAlester Penetentiary escapees
being sought for multiple murders committed after
their escape in their flight through six states

Trooper Summers and Trooper Young encountered
the two escapees on a county road near Kenefic
and were killed in the resulting gun fight.
Trooper Summers had served with the Oklahoma
Highway Patrol for 32 years.
