Peanuts became a commercial crop following the Civil War. George Washington Carver experimented and developed 300 uses for the peanut. The Five Civilized Tribes brought the peanut to Indian Territory, and settlers began cultivating the crop. In 1922, Bryan County produced 120,000 bushels of peanuts. After the Depression in the 1930's, the town of Durant had three peanut processing plants.

The ghost on the side of this five-story brick building at 401 Clerk Street reads: "DURANT(?) PEANUT SHELLING PLANT". The building is still operated by Golden Peanut Company and Hardy Farms.
