Die 65.000 Quadratmeter große Festung verfügt über ein gigantisches Labyrinth aus Räumen, Gängen und Treppen und erstreckt sich über eine Geländefläche von mehr als 20 Hektar. Die Anlage wurde nach den Bauplänen von Ingenieur Franz von Scholl gebaut. Sie ist dem Gelände angepasst und besteht aus drei Forts. Die äußere Form der gesamten Anlage hat viele Ecken mit spitzen Winkeln, jedes Element hat standardisierte Maße. Auch die Fassaden mit ihren Scharten und den bogenförmigen Öffnungen für die Geschütze bestehen aus sich wiederholenden Elementen.
Damit markiert die Festung den Beginn einer seriellen Architektur, wie sie in der so genannten Ingenieursbaukunst üblich ist. Durch die konsequente Reduzierung auf die Funktion bei gleichzeitig hoher handwerklicher Präzision präsentiert sich uns heute ein überraschend modernes Bauwerk. Die Untere sowie die Mittlere Festung wurden durch zeitgemäße Architektureingriffe für die moderne Nutzung adaptiert."
