The Washington Street Cemetery was in active use from 1827 until about 1950. It contains about 2,200 known graves. The gateway was a gift from Henry Dwight, a former president of the National Bank of Geneva. It dates from about 1845. The gateway was designed by architect Philotus Gaylord.
The gateways have stood here almost continuously since the mid-1840's. In 1984 the gateway underwent repairs after being hit by a truck. Once again, from 2005 until 2009, the gateway was again absent after getting hit by another truck. Community efforts resulted in the gateway being repaired and restored once again. It was rededicated in November, 2017.
