"On Friday, phase one of the State Route 434 Greenway project officially opened. The walkway connects the South Washington Street Pedestrian Bridge to the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Vestal Avenue in Binghamton. The project began construction in June 2016.

Local leaders say the walkway is a safe alternative to having to cross major roads. "Historically from minor to very major incidents have taken place over several decades when it come to the Vestal Parkway when it comes to people crossing the street, so now, we have a safe well lit thorough fair for people to cross the parkway and get to downtown," said Binghamton Mayor Rich David.
