"New family owned and operated Pelican's SnoBalls is expected to open in downtown Douglasville just in time for the summer heat , offering real New Orleans-style SnoBalls.

"The Douglasville store is the eighth location in the state and opening day is planned for on, or around, July 1, said Douglasville Franchise Owner Erik Goodin.

"Goodin, contacted by phone, said that the company began 16 years ago and is based in North Carolina.

'“It was my first job,” Goodin said. “[Now] there are over 100 stores in 10 states.”

"Pelican’s Snowballs will be located downtown at 6482 E. Broad St., near the corner of East Broad Street and Fairburn Road in a building that formerly housed an auto repair shop. Hours of operation will be Monday through Saturday 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday’s 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"Named for the state bird of Louisiana, according to information available on the company’s website, Pelican's SnoBalls strives to stay true to the "Original New Orleans" SnoBall.

"But is it a snowball or shaved ice?

'“It’s very close to real snow,” Goodin said, who characterized the SnoBall as a “gourmet frozen desert.”

"There are 100 flavors available and 25 toppings, which Goodin says will offer customers "limitless possibilities."

"From the “Bahama Mama” to the “Wild Thang,” the flavors come from Louisiana, and are said to be “... perfected from a hundred years of satisfying thirsty customers in sweltering summer heat.”

"And for the diet conscious it may be helpful to know there are only about 150 calories in a kiddie Snoball and no fat or cholesterol (unless you get it "stuffed," or a SnoCream). Pelican's SnoBalls don’t have Gluten in them and no high fructose corn syrup is used. And they’re easy on the dry cleaning bill since syrup spills will not stain clothing.

"Customers can purchase Pelican SnoBucks, aluminum coins that resemble Mardi Gras doubloons, that are sold and accepted at all Pelican’s locations. Customers get 25 SnoBucks for $20 and can give them as gifts.

"Goodin said that the focus for Pelican’s SnoBalls is intended to be a “family friendly environment” with plenty of activities on site.
