If the maids or housewives come there from shopping or bring their water with tubs and buckets, is usually still a little time for a chat. This is how the sculptor Hans-Werner Könecke imagined when he took part in an open competition in 1989 for a piece of art that would enrich the then newly designed shopping and market zone. "There are two women who gossip," says Könecke. It was actually an idea of the former mayor, reveals the artist, that it has become a fountain situation, as it has been imagined since biblical times. Especially known for his animal sculptures, Könecke provided the entire concept for his fountain installation: set amidst trees, he designed a broad, two-tiered granite base on which a solid round well of the same material stands. At him he places his bronze market women, who radiate a cozy coziness in this place.
Hans-Werner Könecke:
Born in Frankfurt on the Oder in 1940, the son of a Möllner aviation officer, he grew up with his grandmother after the war in Mölln and Hamburg. In Mölln he received painting and drawing lessons from the painter Max Ahrens, before discovering his talent as a sculptor during an apprenticeship as a model carpenter. More than 200 of his realistic works can be found in many places - not only in the Hamburg area, but also, for example, in Ratzeburg, Schwerin, on the cruise ship Europe or in New York.
