Kootenai was first established in 1899 by the Ellersick family from Minnesota who built a sawmill. Most of the residents were employed by the company until 1931. They also owned an adjoining company store name Kootenai.

In 1910 the town was officially named and was one of the largest communities in the area. Kootenai celebrated their 100th year centennial in 2010. Kootenai has a population of approximately 739 residents and located in Bonner County.

The town was most likely named for the Ktunaxa, one of the first indigenous tribes in northern Idaho.

It is interesting to note that the ice house harvested ice from the Lake Pend Oreille during the winter.
Type of community: Town
