Kootenai was first established in 1899 by a family from Minnesota who built a sawmill. Most of the residents were employed by the company until 1931.

In 1910 the town was officially named and was one of the largest communities in the area. Kootenai celebrated their 100th year centennial in 2010.

It is interesting to note that the ice house harvested ice from the Lake Pend Oreille during the winter.
