The cast bronze bust of Alexander Berry (1781-1873) sits on top of several tiers of rectangular shaped local stone on a concrete pad, at the corner of Prince Alfred Street and Princes Highway/Queen Street. This is at the eastern entrance to what had been the settlement of 'Coolangatta Estate', now the small town of Berry. He is depicted with bushy eyebrows, wearing a dinner jacket and a cravat. It seems to be slightly larger than 'life-sized'.
On the southern side of the plinth is a square bronze plaque, which details the following:
Alexander Berry 1781 - 1873
This memorial honours his achievements as a
surgeon, explorer, merchant, adventurer and first
European settler of the Shoalhaven in 1822. A great
Scottish humanitarian, he provided for the David
Berry Hospital and the Chair of English Literature
in the University of St Andrews.
His determination to create mixed farming and
associated industries to replace bush
and swamp succeeded in laying the foundations of
the thriving Shoalhaven District as we know and
enjoy today.
