Near the walking and cycle path along the northern edge of Lake Macquarie at Speers Point Park is a concrete plinth with a steeply angled faced, and dressed in 'Pebblecrete'. On the northern face is a bronze plaque places as part of the Australian Bicentennial celebrations of 1988, and it reads:

Lake Macquarie Park (Speers Point Park)

"This park was gazetted in 1887 and officially opened 22 May 1888. Thomas Abel and James Fletcher M.L.A. of Wallsend persuaded the Government to purchase the land from William Speers for use by the residents of the coal mining suburbs of Wallsend and Plattsburgh. It became a favourite venue for sailing and sculling regattas, holiday camping and organized picnics, especially with the opening in 1912 of a steam tram service from Newcastle."
