This is a 'life-sized' bronze 'action-posed' bronze cast statue of Marjorie, in full sprint. It is elevated on a brick and concrete plinth in a small Cook Street Plaza / walkway of Lithgow. She is wearing typical athletic clothing of that era, being light-weight shorts and singlet.

While Marjorie was born in Coffs Harbour (NSW), she grew up in Lithgow, and earned the nickname of "Lithgow Flash" when she beat the Olympic champion of the 100 and 200 metres races, Fanny Blankers-Koen in 1949.

BTW, the "Lithgow Mercury" had an article the day that I happened to go through 'town', about the replacement of this statue! (visit link) The statue was created by the late Antony Symons in July 2000, in his Rydal studio. [As my photos show, the statue had not been secured to the brown brick plinth at that stage, but was only resting on it, with low metal barriers around it. There was no plaque for it, and when I spoke with a passing Lithgow resident I found out who it was of, as I had made a wrong guess, and thought it was another athlete of that era [Betty Cuthbert].

"Marjorie Jackson-Nelson, ‘the Lithgow Flash’, is arguably our most famous citizen,” Cr Leslie said.

“Marjorie won gold medals in the 100 and 200 metres at the Helsinki Olympic games in 1952 and a further seven gold medals at Commonwealth Games.”" [ex-article]

"Marjorie Jackson-Nelson, AC, CVO, MBE (born 13 September 1931) is the former Governor of South Australia." (visit link)
