The story of Leslie Sabo, Jr. (2/22/1948 - 5/10/1970) is written on this marker, telling of the selfless actions he took on that fateful day. Sabo was an Austrian immigrant to the United States. Wikipedia tells of how the awarding of his Medal of Honor was delayed and eventually bestowed. "Sabo was nominated for the Medal of Honor shortly after his death, but the records were lost. In 1999 a fellow Vietnam War veteran came across the records and began the process of reopening Sabo's nomination. Following several delays, Sabo's widow received the Medal of Honor from President Barack Obama on 16 May 2012, 42 years after his death."

COMPANY OF HEROES
(A Forgotten Medal of Honor
of the Vietnam War)
Out on patrol near a remote border area of
Cambodia on May 10, 1970, Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion,
506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division,
was attacked by the North Vietnamese in what became
known as the "Mother's Day Ambush". This small group of
troops fought their way to freedom and one man,
Army Specialist Leslie Sabo Jr.,
privately gave his life in the process.

LESLIE SABO JR. - Posthumous Medal of Honor

When a grenade landed near by a wounded comrade,
Sabo picked up the grenade, threw it away while
shielding his buddy with his own body, thus absorbing
the brunt of the blast and saving the man's life.
Seriously wounded by the blast, Sabo, nevertheless,
retained the initiative and single-handedly charged an
enemy bunker that had inflicted severe damage on the platoon.
He received several serious wounds from the withering
automatic weapons fired in the process, despite being
mortally injured. He crawled toward the enemy
emplacement and, when in position, threw a grenade into
the bunker. This resulting explosion silenced the enemy
fire, but also ended Spc.4 Sabo's life.
