Along the walk in front of the Addington war memorial, plaques tell various stories about the war years. This plaque gives the history of the term "G.I.Joe.":

THE STORY OF
G.I. JOE
During World War II, soldiers
fighting on foot from village
to village in France (1943)
were exhausted from battle
fatigue - kept moving forward.
Capt. Scott Morris turned
to one of his sergeants to
order patrols to go out on
recon. The Capt. told the
sergeant he could not go,
due to his already out on
two patrols earlier - and
needed the rest. The sergeant
said: "I'm fine Captain, besides
every step forward, is one
step closer to home."
This one sentence sums up what
an American soldier is all about -
Liberty and Freedom for All!
