Statement of Significance
This building is part of the historic precinct of Hahndorf which preserves the way of life of German settlers who lived in a group tied together by their religious beliefs. It was the search for religious freedom which brought them to South Australia but they soon established themselves as examples for the English business world to follow by achieving economic security very soon after settlement.

Description
This German style half hipped roof, steeply pitched, is in good repair. The land was originally granted to Joseph Renfrey and there is some evidence to suggest that the first German to own it was Christoph Leibelt in 1853. A watchmaker owned it in the 1860s. August Christoph became registered as a storekeeper under the new system on 15 February 1865 and may have been the first proprietor. The building is now a shop and residence.

The sign at the building reads:
OLD SHOP
This typical two-storey German building was constructed on land originally granted to JOSEPH REMFREY. In 1861, watchmaker AUGUST CHRISTOPH purchased the land, and erected the shop. The building went on to be used as a cobbler's, as a dressmaking premises, Aunty Betty's sweet shop and later a café.
