The grave of Major George S. Dawson is marked by a beautiful marble monument shaped to suggest the form of a Union soldier. The top has a sculpture of a soldier's cap and the front has a flag draped over the left "shoulder" and a diagonal sheathed sword. Below is the inscription:

1ST BRIG. 1ST DIV. 2D CORPS
DIED
DEC. 6, 1864
AGED 26 YEARS
FROM WOUNDS RECEIVED IN BATTLE IN FRONT OF
PETERSBURG VA. JUNE 16, 1864


HE GAVE HIS LIFE
TO PERPETUATE THE UNION
AND TO SECURE
FREEDOM TO THE ENSLAVED

Major Dawson was struck by a minnie ball above the left knee. The leg had to be amputated. The bone above the amputation was diseased, which resulted in his death.
