Located on Highway 81 on the north edge of Comanche, a Centennial Plaza commemorates Oklahoma statehood and also several areas of local history. This historical marble plaque telling of the history of the City of Comanche reads:
The City of Comanche The land on which you are standing was originally part of the Chickasaw Indian Nation. The Chickasaw Nation boundaries were the Red River to the south, near Beaver Creek to the west, near Anadarko to the north, and from the Canadian River. The Chickasaws were part of the infamous "Trail of Tears". As early as 1882 white settlers were moving into the area, leasing land from the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes. Johnny and Willie Wilson leased the land on which Comanche was built. Several Indian tribes: Chickasaw, Comanche, Kiowa and Apache hunted the fertile valleys of Cow Creek down to the Red River, traveling by wagon and horseback from as far as Ohio. Nearly 500 people had settled in the area known as the "Border Queen". Comanche became a busy settlement when the Rock Island Railroad laid tracks. at the edge of town. Comanche was incorporated in 1898 and the first mayor was George Kincaid.
