A 15-feet high monument commemorates the local men who lost their lives during the Civil War. The monument was constructed in 1873 and features a bronze statue of a Union soldier atop a tall granite base. The Union soldier is wearing a knee-length coat with a cape. He is standing while holding his rifle with his right hand and resting the wrist of his left hand on the tip of the barrel. On the upper part of the front of the base is a bronze bas-relief sculpture of President Abraham Lincoln depicted in in right profile.
On the west and east sides of the base are bronze plaques with the inscription:
GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC
1861 MEMORIAL 1965
Which is followed by a three column list of names of fallen Union service members.
On the north and south side of the base is a bronze plaques with the inscription:
TO THE MEMORY OF OUR FALLEN
1861 COMRADES 1965
Which is followed by a three column list of names of fallen Union service members.
In total, there are the names of 648 fallen service members from the Albany area on the four plaques.
