The Strip District used to be chock full of small and medium size factories like this one. Now, they're mostly closed or are in various stages of demolition or conversion to other uses. This factory is in the advanced stages of renovation as loft apartments.

Built in 1901, the factory complex has stood vacant for more than 30 years. It was a magnet for arsonists and vagrants, and was a real eyesore from up close or from across the Allegheny River. It's nice to see it get a new lease on life.

The purpose of the factory was to cut cork for use in consumer and industrial applications. Thomas Armstrong founded Armstrong Cork in 1860, and it eventually became Armstrong World Industries, a diversified manufacturing firm.
