Westinghouse High School has nearly a century-long history of producing jazz musicians and other geniuses from this predominantly African-American neighborhood. Among its famous alumni is Billy Strayhorn, composer of "Take the A Train," who's memorialized by a Pennsylvania Historic Marker in front of the school. Other jazz greats who walked these halls include jazz pianist Frank Cunimondo, pianist/composer Errol Garner, and Ahmad Jahmal, a more modern jazz keyboard player. Basketball Hall of Fame member Maurice Stokes ran up and down the court at Westinghouse High.

The architectural style of the school is classical revival, and the design firm was Ingham & Boyd.
