Quick Description: It looks like a haunted house, but this was once an important music school in a vibrant, predominantly African-American neighborhood called Homewood. Opera came from here, not just jazz!

Long Description:
Homewood and its nearby neighbor, the "Hill District," produced some of the greatest jazz musicians of the last century. It also produced the first Black Opera Company to achieve national prominence. A Pennsylvania Historic Marker memorializes the school where it all started. It's a run-down house on a hillside now, but is a candidate for preservation.

Here is the Marker Text:

Here at the Cardwell School of Music, this first national Black opera company was founded in 1941 by Mary Caldwell Dawson. Noted for its musical genius, it performed for 21 years in Pittsburgh, Washington, New York, and other cities.
