A body of a woman is found in a shallow grave. She had traces of soil in her lungs, indicating that she was alive when she went into the ground. A tattoo traces the woman to Estonia, and chemicals under her nails to a nail bar. She is identified at Katrin Vesik, who had come to England to trace her sister, Annika. Katrin had rung the police the night she died. At the nail bar a worker, Jodie, tells Banks that Annika was involved in drugs and prostitution. She had been dismissed for being aggressive, in particular she had had an altercation with racist Shane Harris.

Jodie is followed at night and the police find that the escort agency and nail bar are run by Jason McCready. The girls are ferried about by Michael Osgood and his autistic son, Robbie. Robbie had been befriended by Katrin. The Osgoods are being persecuted by local youths who have fire bombed the Osgood’s car.

During the investigation DCI Banks’s mother dies of a stroke. Banks’s father gives DCI Banks the cold shoulder afterwards. The Osgood family home is set ablaze and Robbie dies. His father is rescued but hospitalised. The chief suspect of the arson attack is McCready’s nephew, Gary.

A second body is found. This time it is a man that has died of a heart attack, who appears to be an illegal immigrant. Shane Harris tells the team that Annika has just rung him from a call box, but was cut off. The team find the call box with blood on the floor.

Banks mounts a raid on McCready’s farm and finds illegal migrant workers locked in a barn. Jason McCready admits that he pushed Katrin and she fell and banged her head. He says that Robbie took the body away and must have killed he while burying her. The case appears to be closed, but CCTV shows that the lads who persecuted the Osgoods weren’t near the fire at the time it was started. Further, the fire seemed to have started from the inside. Michael Osgood admits to starting the fire to spare his son from prison.

DI Morton isn’t convince Robbie is the culprit. She decides to find out how long it took to drive the body from McCready’s farm to the burial site. Given that Robbie had OCD, and hence drove slowly, it was impossible for him to have taken the body. Obviously Jason McCready was the killer.
