General Daniel Morgan was born in New Jersey on July 6, 1736. While the exact location of his birth is not recorded, it is thought that he was born in Lebanon Township. He left home at the age of 17, and eventually settled near present day Winchester, Virginia. During the French and Indian War, he worked at a teamster along with his cousin Daniel Boone. During Dunmore’s War he participated in raids on the Shawnee Villages in the Ohio Territory. He later served in the Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War rising to the rank of General. He was a member of Benedict Arnolds expedition to Quebec and participated in Arnold’s Saratoga Campaign. During the Revolutionary War, Morgan was regarded as a brilliant military commander, participating in several key battles including the American Victory at Cowpens. Following the war, he returned to Winchester where he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving on term from 1797-1799. In 1799 he retired from congress and returned to Winchester where he lived the rest of his life. General Daniel Morgan died on his 66th birthday, July 6, 1802 at his daughter’s home in Winchester. He was originally buried at Winchester’s Old Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery but was reinterred at Mt. Hebron Cemetery following the Civil War.
