"The building named after its designer, architect Jean Wik, was completed in 1843. A log house in neoclassical style, it originally served as a bakery. At the time of its completion, the garden extended to the shore, which was a suitable place for a bakery. For reasons of fire safety, this building for baking, brewing and laundering was located further away from the other buildings.
In the early 1900s, the University gave way to the City's persistent demands for a street between the garden and the shoreline, and so the bakery was moved 11 metres to the south (visit link) . However, it was not until the 1930s that the street was actually created. Several landfills have been added to the shoreline since, which has consequently moved further out. Today the ]ean Wik bakery houses a seed bank, which stores the seeds of endangered species in Finland."

"Jean Wik -nimellä kulkeva rakennus on alun perin leivintuparakennus vuodelta 1843. Rakennus tehtiin hirrestä empiretyyliin arkkitehti Jean Wikin suunnitelmien mukaan. Siihen aikaan puutarhan alue ulottui Kaisaniemenlahteen saakka, ja leivintupa rakennettiin vedenäärelle. Leipomista, juomanpanoa ja pyykinpesua varten tehty tupa sijaitsi paloturvallisuussyistä etäämmällä muista rakennuksista.
1900-luvun alussa yliopisto myöntyi kaupungin pitkällisiin vaatimuksiin kadun rakentamisesta puutarhan ja rannan Väliin, ja leivintupa Siirrettiin 11 metriä etelään päin (visit link) . Katu toteutui kuitenkin vasta 1930-luvun taitteessa. Rantaviivaan on tehty useampaan otteeseen maantäyttöjä, ja vesiraja on siirtynyt edemmäksi. Nykyään Jean Wikissä on siemenpankki, jossa on tallessa Suomen uhanalaisia lajeja."
