One of several accesses to the nature reserve Stellmoorer Tunneltal in Hamburg's Rahlstedt district.
The nature reserve Stellmoorer Tunneltal is located in Hamburg's Rahlstedt district near the nature reserves Höltigbaum and Ahrensburg Tunneltal on the border to Schleswig-Holstein. It is a European protected area under the fauna-flora-habitat directive.
The nature reserve, which covers an area of ??approximately 217 hectares, received its protection status on 28 March 1978, making it one of the older nature reserves in Hamburg.
The terrain was formed by the Vistula Ice Age and represents the lower part of a tunnel valley created by meltwater erosion near the edge of the icing.
Due to the marshy ground, the area has not recently been built on a large scale or intensively used for agriculture. Due to the long-term use for firewood extraction here low oak-Krattwälder have been preserved.
In the swampy parts, you will find the crested newt, the moor frog, the rare lunar maid of honor, the great royal dragonfly or the small pitched dragonfly.
Breeding birds in the area are: lapwing, common snipe, little grebe, red-necked grebe, whinchat, golden oriole and kingfisher.
A special feature are the reindeer hunter finds of the Neolithic Hamburg culture by Alfred Rust, whose locality Stellmoor has made the name of the area known. On a series of late glacial lakes there were summer camps of reindeer hunters here at the end of the last ice age, which today are significant archaeological sites.
