A 6' 3" high by 5'2'wide bronze sculpture of the Angel of Sorrow is next to the black granite sarcophagus of President Chester Alan Arthur. The angel is placing a palm frond on top a sarcophagus. Curving steps lead to a tiered base on which the angel and sarcophagus are set.
The monument was sculpted by Ephraim Keyser and funded by the friends of Chester A. Arthur. It was installed in Albany Rural Cemetery on June 15, 1889. The side of the upper tier of the base is inscribed ARTHUR. Two bronze plaques are set on the top of the upper tier of the base of the sarcophagus. The first is the circular seal of the President of the United States. The other is a rectangular plaque which is inscribed:
Chester·Alan·Arthur
Twenty-First
President of the United States
Born Died
October 5th 1830 November 18th 1886
