The Curtain, designed by sculptor Raimo Utriainen and raised in memory of Ida Aalberg in 1972. Being the first abstract sculpted monument ever planned in Finland it caused a huge uproar.

On the other side of The Finnish National Theatre, in Kaisaniemi Park, there is a monument, The Curtain, designed by sculptor Raimo Utriainen and raised in memory of Ida Aalberg in 1972.
"The Curtain' marks a turning point in Finnish memorial sculpture - it is the first abstract memorial of a person to be actually realized. Raimo Utriainen's (1927-1994) entry won the general competition for the memorial in 1961 and the following invitational in 1962. The 9-metre high bronze memorial, set on a red granite pedestal, was unveiled in 1972.
Ida Aalberg (1857-1915) was a famed star of the Suomalainen teatteri theatre and was considered the best actress in the Nordic countries in her time. Visually, Utriainen's work is based on the heavy, yet dynamic movement of a theatre curtain. It derives its power from the interplay of light, space and form.
The work of art belongs to the collection of HAM Helsinki Art Museum."

"Esirippu edustaa käännekohtaa suomalaisessa muistomerkkituotannossa, sillä se oli ensimmäisiä abstrakteja henkilömuistomerkkejä Sibeliusmonumentin ohella. Raimo Utriainen (1927-1994) voitti ehdotuksellaan ensin yleisen kilpailun 1961 ja sen jälkeen kutsukilpailun 1962. Säveltäjämestari Jean Sibeliuksen muistomerkistä järjestettiin kilpailu samoihin aikoihin. Sen voitti puolestaan kuvanveistäjä Eila Hiltunen niin ikään abtraktilla ehdotuksellaan.
Ida Aalberg (1857-1915) oli Suomalaisen teatterin suuri tähti ja aikanaan Pohjoismaiden parhaana pidetty näyttelijä.
Punagraniittiselta jalustalta kohoava, 9 metrin korkeuteen kurottuva pronssinen muistomerkki paljastettiin 1972. Utriaisen veistoksen visuaalinen lähtökohta on teatterin esiripun raskas mutta dynaaminen liike. Teoksen teho syntyy valon, tilan ja muodon vuorovaikutuksesta.
Teos kuuluu HAM Helsingin taidemuseon kokoelmiin."
