FR Située entre Vernègues et son hameau Cazan la construction de cette petite chapelle rurale, de conception architecturale très simple, remonte au XIIème siècle : elle consiste alors en un chœur semi-circulaire de 2 travées. L'aspect actuel du bâtiment résulte des nombreuses modifications intervenues au cours des siècles non pas par soucis d'amélioration esthétique, mais pour faire face à l'afflux toujours plus grand de pèlerins.

Dès le Moyen-Âge, Saint Symphorien, jeune martyr chrétien, est vénéré dans toute la Provence, particulièrement à Vernègues où les infirmes et les estropiés l'invoquent comme saint guérisseur (et ce jusqu'à la révolution) de nombreux ex-voto et béquilles en témoignent. En 1644 Charles de Valois, duc d' Angoulême vient y faire neuvaine, celle-ci débute soit le 11 août, soit le 22 août jour de fête du saint. Le pèlerinage a lieu les 21 août selon un cérémonial très précis et immuable. L'Archevêque d'Arles, notre coseigneur possède pour cette occasion la juridiction et le droit de criées.

Interrompu lors de la révolution, le pèlerinage subsiste, le 21 août vers 17h00, la statue du saint installée dans son baldaquin est conduite en procession de l'église Notre Dame de Lourdes à sa chapelle et l'on prie le saint pour l'obtention de la pluie. Le 2ème dimanche d'octobre le saint est alors remonté à l'église de Vernègues.
EN Located between Vernègues and his hamlet Cazan the construction of this small rural chapel, of very simple architectural design, dates back to the 12th century: it consists of a semi-circular choir of 2 bays. The current appearance of the building is the result of many changes over the centuries not for the sake of aesthetic improvement, but to cope with the ever-increasing influx of pilgrims.

From the Middle Ages, Saint Symphorien, a young Christian martyr, is venerated throughout Provence, especially in Vernègues where the crippled and crippled invoke as healer (and until the revolution) many ex-voto and crutches testify.
