Rockwell Kent painted this scene from his home on Horn's Hill around 1950. Go to open studio hours for the Kent Fitzgerald studio on Horn's Hill Saturdays 12-2, and Thursdays 1-3, ask to be directed to the Kent House nearby.

The original painting is on view at the Monhegan Museum of Art and History as part of the 2018 exhibition "Island Treasure: Celebrating 50 years of the Monhegan Museum".

Rockwell Kent (1882 – 1971)
Kent studied architecture at Columbia University and painting with William Merritt Chase at Shinnecock Hills, Long Island, and with Robert Henri and Kenneth H. Miller at the New York School of Art. He also apprenticed with Abbott Thayer in Dublin, New Hampshire. Kent came to Monhegan in 1905, the first of Robert Henri’s students to come for an extended stay after Henri had visited in 1903. Kent spent much of each year on Monhegan from 1905 until 1910. He built a house for himself in 1906, and a studio in 1910 where he had a summer art school that year. Kent left Monhegan after the summer of 1910, returned briefly in 1917 and 1947, and then bought back his house in 1948. He spent time painting on the island each year until 1953.
