Woodward Maurice “Tex” Ritter was born on January 12, 1964 in Panola County, Texas. After graduating from High School in Beaumont, Texas he attended the University of Texas where he organized the glee club. After graduating from college, Tex began an entertainment career that would span three mediums, stage, motion pictures and Television. He was regarded as one of the early singing cowboys because of his love for country western folk music. During his career he starred in 85 movies, 78 of which were westerns. During his career he became known for several hit songs including, Rye Whisky”, “The Wayward Wind,” “Hillbilly Heaven,” and “High Noon.” He also was a popular star on the Grand Ole Opry and was instrumental in founding the Country Music Hall of Fame, which inducted him as their 5th member in 1964. A career that spanned almost 50-years came to and end on January 2, 1974 when Tex Ritter passed away in Nashville Tennessee. He was laid to rest in the Oak Bluff Cemetery in Port Neches, Texas.

Woodward Maurice Ritter was born in Panola County Texas on January 12, 1904. After graduating from South Park High School in Beaumont, Texas, he attended the University of Texas where he founded the Glee Club. After graduating from the college, he began his singing career at KPRC – Radio in Houston and began touring in 1930. In 1932 he was a featured singer at the Madison Square Garden Rodeo, which firmly established him as one of the best “singing cowboys. His reputation as a “singing cowboy,” landed him a starring role in the “Lone Star Rangers’ radio program. In 1936 he signed his first movie contract that would lead to a career where he starred in 85 motion pictures, 78 of which were westerns. During his movie career, Tex continue his singing career by performing through out the country. He had several hit songs, including “Rye Whisky”, “The Wayward Wind,” “Hillbilly Heaven,” and perhaps his best-known song,” High Noon.” Tex Ritter also appeared on the Grand Ole Opry and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1964. Tex was the father of John Ritter who starred in the TV Series Three’s Company. Tex Ritter died on a heart attack on January 2, 1974 in Nashville, Tennessee. Following funeral serves in Nashville and in his native Texas, Tex Ritter was laid to rest in the Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, Texas.
