Celburne Times Review The idea to erect a statue of Gen. Pat Cleburne originated with Cleburne resident and Buffalo Creek Association President Joe Browder.
Browder opined that Cleburne ought in some way commemorate the man who inspired the city's name. Others agreed and donations poured in. From conception to erection the project took just over a year.
Although Cleburne never visited the area that later became Cleburne, several Texas residents served under his command during the Civil War. Upon returning home, they successfully lobbied to name the new city after their former commander.
Gen. Cleburne was forward thinking as the city he inspired, Cleburne Mayor Scott Cain said during the ceremony.
BCA tapped Cleburne artist Jeff Gottfried to create the bronze likeness of Cleburne. Gottfried previously sculpted a statue of a fireman, which will be featured in an honor monument planned for Cleburne’s Winston Patrick McGregor Park.
Gottfried is also working with Gov. Rick Perry on a sculpture project to be built at Texas A&M University.
The statue, to be placed near the intersection of Buffalo and Chambers streets, will be about 6 feet tall mounted on a base about 5 feet tall surrounded by paving stones and decorative landscaping.
