This important European Marian pilgrimage site is one of the most precious architectural monuments of the Early Baroque period in Bohemia. A little statue of Our Lady is situated here; regular processions still lead to it to the present day.
The complex was built between 1658 and 1709. Its centrepiece is the Baroque Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, designed by Carlo Lurago, a leading Italian architect. Kilián Ignác Dienzenhofer, a renowned builder, also participated in its construction and decoration. The Holy Mountain received great recognition in 1905 when the Pope Pius X. awarded it the title basilica minor, given only to major Christian shrines of world importance.
