The Soldiers Memorial was built to commemorate World War One but has been supplemented with plaques commemorating subsequent conflicts. The names of 1100 First World War soldiers who enlisted (including 240 killed) were listed on the surrounding panels of marble between polished granite pillars, to which the names of the Second World War servicemen were added.
