Stadtbrunnen von 1572
Vom früheren Stadtbrunnen, der wohl zentral auf dem Marktplatz stand, hat sich eine Ritterfigur aus Sandstein erhalten. Diese Figur, geschaffen in den Jahren zwischen 1572 und 1577, wird dem Bamberger Bildhauer Pankraz Wagner zugeschrieben. Auf dem Schild sind die Wappen des Fürstbischofs Veit II. von Würtzburg (1561-1577), des Hochstifts Bamberg und der Stadt Weismain dargestellt.
Um 1830 musste der Brunnen abgebaut werden, weil der Marktplatz neu gepflastert werden sollte. 30 Jahre später – am 7. Juli 1860 – erhielt der sogenannte „Brunnenmann“ wieder seinen Platz am Weismainer Markt.
Seit 1879 soll allerdings die Originalfigur im Hof des Mitwitzer Wasserschlosses stehen, während die Weismainer für ihren Brunnen eine Kopie der Ritterfigur bekamen.
Der Brunnen wird von den Weismainern „Rolandsbrunnen“ genannt. Unklar ist die Deutung der Sandsteinfigur. Um einen „Roland“ handelt es sich wahrscheinlich nicht. In Weismain fanden im 16. Jahrhundert die Gerichtssitzungen am Brunnen statt. Daher sind auch Zusammenhänge mit den recht ähnlichen, besonders aus Süddeutschland bekannten Prangerfiguren denkbar.
From the former city fountain, which was probably centrally located on the market square, a knight figure made of sandstone has been preserved. This figure, created in the years between 1572 and 1577, is attributed to the Bamberg sculptor Pankraz Wagner. The coat of arms of Prince-Bishop Veit II of Wurtzburg (1561-1577), the Bishopric of Bamberg and the city of Weismain are shown on the shield.
By 1830, the well had to be dismantled because the marketplace should be repaved. 30 years later - on July 7, 1860 - the so-called "well man" again got his place at the Weismainer Markt.
Since 1879, however, the original figure in the courtyard of the Mitwitzer moated castle, while the Weismainers got a copy of the knight figure for their well.
The fountain is called "Rolandsbrunnen" by the Weismain people. Unclear is the interpretation of the sandstone figure. A "Roland" is probably not. In Weismain, the court sessions took place at the fountain in the 16th century. Therefore, connections with the quite similar, especially from southern Germany known pillory figures are conceivable.
