The British took possession of Malta in 1800, defeating an unpopular French garrison that had taken possession of the islands two years earlier.

Although Malta was given a degree of independence in 1921, it was in 1964 that it became fully independent.

Despite its independence there are still close ties with the UK, and many UK style telephone boxes and post boxes are still in use.
