Located at the Oberdorfstraße in Kempenich you will find a portal, erected 2001 at the same place where the old gate stands up to 1661 when it was burned down.
At the top of the gate stands a statue of a goat, carved from sandstone.

At the wall of the gate you will find a plaque which says:

"OBERE PFORTE"

Hier stand bis zum Großbrand 1661 die sog. "Obere Pforte". Dort mündet die Straße "Oberdorf" auf die Straße "Hinter der Mauer" sowie den in Richtung der sog. "Grabengärten" führenden Fußweg. Diese Gärten lagen außerhalb der durch einen zusätzlichen Graben geschützten
Ortsumwehrung. Der Häuserblock zwischen der "Enggasse" und "Hinter der Mauer" lag bis etwa im Jahr 1400 außerhalb der Ortsbefestigung.

"OBERE PFORTE"

The so-called "Upper Gate" stood here until the great fire in 1661. There the street "Oberdorf" leads to the street "Hinter der Mauer" as well as the footpath leading to the so-called "Grabengärten". These gardens were located outside of the
Local defences. The block of houses between the "Enggasse" and "Hinter der Mauer" was outside the town fortifications until about 1400.
