The bell is used during the service, at predetermined times, to punctuate the liturgy of the 5.30pm Saturday Vigil.
The single bell, about 40 cm in diameter, had a heavy dark patina, and is mounted under a curved sheet of rusty corrugated iron at the top of the 4 m tower, that is constructed of angle-iron and thin metal bar bracing struts. There is a metal chain attached, for the acolyte/altar boy to pull. A window of the Transept was opened so he could listen, and ring the bell at the correct times.
