Glacial Lake Agassiz formed about 16,000 years ago as the ice sheets began to retreat at the end of the last ice age. It was the largest of the glacial lakes, covering 350,000 square kilometers, and having depths up to 200 meters. This sign is located at Alexander Ridge Park, atop the Manitoba Escarpment near Miami, Manitoba, on the former shoreline of Glacial Lake Agassiz. An observation tower affords a tremendous view down the escarpment and across the Red River valley. As the ice sheets slowly retreated, the waters of Lake Agassiz drained in many different directions. Waters in the former lake bed now drain north into Hudson Bay, but as the region continues to undergo isostatic rebound, in the far future these waters may once again drain to the south.
