Der ursprüngliche lateinische Name Antunnacum stammt wahrscheinlich aus dem Keltischen: (Antunnacos). Das keltische Suffix -acos (latinisiert -acum) zusammen mit dem – nicht nachweisbaren – Namen Antunnus bedeutet in der Kombination so viel wie Dorf des Antunnus. Erstmals taucht der Name am Ende des 3. Jahrhunderts auf einem römischen Meilenstein im belgischen Tongeren, dem römischen Aduatuca Tongrorum, auf. In einem römischen Straßenverzeichnis erscheint dann später die Bezeichnung Antonnaco."
