Merkel plants "Unity Trees" in Bonn

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) reached for a shovel in Bonn on Friday to plant a tree as a monument to German unity.

As in numerous other cities in Germany, an oak, a beech and a pine stand on the banks of the Rhine in Bonn to symbolize Germany growing together. The three trees form a triangle.
Merkel called the tree monument a "symbol of German unity" and the "most beautiful moment in our recent history". German history shows that "a change for the better is possible," she said with a view to current crises in Europe, such as the conflict in Ukraine.

The tree monument is an action of the German Forest Protection Association. According to them, the beech stands for West Germany, the pine stands for the eastern states and the oak stands for reunified Germany. More than 150 cities have already participated in the memorial campaign.
