From a plaque at the site: "This sign was once located at Mel's Bowl at 2580 El Camino Real in Redwood City. Influenced by car culture, jets, the space age and atomic age, the sign's googie style was an important form of the Mid 20th century modern architecture and was prevalent along El Camino Real during its rapid development in the post World War II era. Long after the bowling alley changed ownership, it remained an iconic marker for Redwood City. The sign was restored, repurposed and relocated to this site in 2013 when Mel's Bowl Property was redeveloped."
