„We Serve" („Wir dienen") ist unser Motto. Mit 1,4 Millionen Mitgliedern weltweit ist Lions Clubs International (LCI) eine der größten Nichtregierungsorganisationen. Lions initiieren eigene Projekte oder unterstützen nützliche Projekte von Partnerorganisationen. Übergeordnetes Ziel ist dabei die Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe. Die Stiftung von Lions Clubs International (LCIF) gewährt jährlich Zuschüsse in Millionenhöhe, um weltweit humanitäre Hilfe zu gewährleisten. Neben sozialen Zielen fördern Lions auch kulturelle Projekte und setzen sich für Völkerverständigung, Toleranz, Humanität und Bildung ein.
Der erste deutsche Lions Club wurde 1951 in Düsseldorf gegründet. Derzeit engagieren sich in der Bundesrepublik über 52.000 Mitglieder für die Gemeinschaft und für Menschen in Not. Ursprünglich war die Lions-Bewegung in Deutschland eine reine Männersache. Das hat sich geändert. Heute gibt es auch viele Damen- und gemischte Clubs.
Die deutschen Lions Clubs sind im Multi-Distrikt 111-Deutschland der Internationalen Vereinigung zusammengeschlossen und werden durch den Vorsitzenden des Governorrates (GRV) vertreten. Schwerpunkte des Engagements sind u.a. verschiedene Programme für Kinder und Jugendliche sowie der weltweite Kampf gegen Blindheit. Die Lions-Jugendprogramme umfassen den internationalen Jugend- und Schüleraustausch, die Präventionsprogramme Lions-Quest, Klasse 2000 und Kindergarten plus, Lions Young Ambassador, den Friedensplakatwettbewerb sowie den Lions Jugend-Musikpreis. Daneben engagieren sich Lions im Bereich Gesundheit und Prävention, helfen nach Katastrophen, organisieren Hilfslieferungen und tragen zum Erhalt deutscher Kulturdenkmäler bei.
Der Welt-Organisation von Lions Clubs International gehören bedeutende Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens an, darunter eine Reihe von Staatsoberhäuptern. Oberster Repräsentant ist der Internationale Präsident. 1945 war Lions Clubs International maßgeblich an der Gründung des Sektors der Nichtregierungsorganisationen bei den Vereinten Nationen beteiligt und ist neben Rotary International die einzige Serviceorganisation, die als beratender Partner mit der UNO einen Konsultarstatus hat."
