[EN] Typical thatched cottage house located in Pornichet.
The cottage is a traditional rural house in northern and western Europe, which takes its name from its thatched roof (wheat or rye straw, reed stalks, as the case may be). It is mainly found in the countries of northern and northwestern Europe: the British Isles, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, as well as in northwestern France, mainly in Normandy and, to a lesser extent, in Brittany. However, there are more southern regions where it is present in a limited space, like the Camargue, the Brière, or in places where a historical presence is attested, as formerly in Quebec, mainly for farm buildings, a legacy dating back to time of New France still present at the beginning of the twentieth century.
