Après sa Résurrection, Jésus, sur les bords du lac de Tibériade, prépare un repas pour les disciples. Sur un feu de braise, il leur apprête du poisson. Déjà lors des multiplications des pains, il avait fait distribuer du poisson aux foules affamées. Pour désigner ces poissons, l’évangile de Jean emploie le mot opsarion, tandis que pour les cent cinquante trois gros poissons de la pêche miraculeuse il a recours au terme ichtys. C’est ce dernier terme qui sera exploité par la tradition chrétienne. L’hébreu connaît également deux mots pour désigner le poisson : nun et dag. Très tôt le poisson deviendra un symbole majeur du christianisme primitif. Dans la basilique byzantine de Bethléem, une mosaïque de la période constantinienne porte l’inscription grecque Ichtys (poisson). De nombreuses lampes à huile byzantines sont décorées avec le symbole du poisson.
