"A jewel inherited from the Middle Ages, here is the church Saint-Alpin completely restored between 2005 and 2010.
Located close to the Place de la République, it has the particularity of being partially embedded in the backs of the houses of the Place de l'Hotel de Ville.
This church was built around 1160 in the heart of the rich merchant district to replace a chapel dedicated to Saint-André and Saint-Alpin (8th bishop of Châlons whose body had been repatriated to these places around 860). From the first church, only the portal and the nave remain.
From the end of the 15th century, the apse, the chevet of the church and the massive tower of the richly carved bell tower were rebuilt thanks to the donations of the merchants. An extension campaign will be launched in the 16th century with the result: the addition of collaterals and decorative elements typical of the Renaissance.
The south arm of the transept (right side of the entrance) remains the perfect example of the Renaissance treatment: window with geminated arches, Doric columns, keystones decorated with the 4 evangelists: Marc by a lion, Mathieu by a winged man, Jean by an eagle, Luke by a bull.
Finally, the restoration works revealed and restored the colors of the vaults of the northern aisle. "

" Petit joyau hérité du Moyen-Age, voici l'église Saint-Alpin entièrement restaurée entre 2005 et 2010.
Située à deux pas de la place de la République, elle présente la particularité d'être partiellement enchâssée dans les arrières des habitations de la place de l'Hôtel de Ville.
Cette église a été édifiée vers 1160 au cœur du riche quartier marchand en remplacement d'une chapelle dédiée à Saint-André puis à Saint-Alpin (8e évêque de Châlons dont le corps avait été rapatrié en ces lieux vers 860). De la première église, ne restent que le portail et la nef.
Dès la fin du 15e siècle, on reconstruit l'abside, le chevet de l'église ainsi que la massive tour du clocher richement sculptée grâce aux dons des marchands. Une campagne d'extension sera lancée au 16e siècle avec pour résultat : l'ajout de collatéraux et d'éléments de décoration typiques de la Renaissance.
Le bras sud du transept (côté droit de l'entrée) reste le parfait exemple du traitement renaissance : fenêtre à arceaux géminés, colonnes doriques, clefs de voûte décorés des 4 évangélistes : Marc par un lion, Mathieu par un homme ailé, Jean par un aigle,
Luc par un taureau.
Enfin, les travaux de restauration ont révélé et remis en état les couleurs des voûtes du bas-côté Nord. "
